A cold front pushed through to give some relief of the hot temperatures in the City lately. It was just cool enough for thousands of sea creatures to come out of the Atlantic Ocean and onto Surf Avenue in Coney Island to celebrate the 40th annual Mermaid Parade. This is an annual ritual that welcomes in summer and boasts as being one of the largest artistic displays in the country. Sea creatures come from all parts of the country to be part of the wild and whimsical event that draws hundreds of thousands to see some of the best of NY creativity on display.

Part of the reason why there are so many incredibly amazing costumes and dance groups is because a panel of Judges keeps track of the best costumes for top prizes at the end of the parade. As usual, many of the Judges are open to bribes with many sweet treats and a few flasks offered for a favorable review. The honor of King Neptune and Queen Mermaid this year went to fellow Brooklynites Dr. Dave Chokshi and Mx Justin Vivian Bond respectively. The parade kicks off with a display of classic cars to get the crowd revved up for a fun day. A live New Orleans style marching band started the wild parade with some festive music. One dance group that got the crowd started were the FindyHoppers and their swing style dancing.

Local talent get to showcase their style and one outstanding group were the School of Fashion Industries making their way down the parade route on Surf Avenue. Just behind them you could hear the thunderous drum beat of the all female drum band Fogo Azul. They were amazing and truly having a great time at the parade. A really creative group were The Golden Gills group taking a slice from the iconic TV show The Golden Girls. Some dancers almost pulled a hammy while busting out some moves. A perennial favorite that keeps getting better every year are the Tailshakers. This dance group really sets the bar high when it comes to showing off their best moves and choreography. The Tailshakers are always on top of their game. A returning group from Baltimore were the Charm City Tails. They were amazing as always. The Mermaid Parade is a NY must see event as it showcases NYs creativity like no other place, except for the Village Halloween parade. It kicks off a summer of hot fun.
